New Artistic Directors of National Theatre Ballet and Drama Companies To Be Chosen by the End of December

The National Theatre Ballet and Drama companies are soon to get their new artistic directors. Expert committees are going to choose from the pre-selected candidates in a closed competition. Proposals will be submitted to doc. Jan Burian, director of the National Theatre, who is supposed to announce the winners by the end of the calendar year. "I am expecting a recommendation, but the final decision will be entirely mine," says Burian. On Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014 there is a meeting of the Ballet committee, which consists of members of the Guarantee Board of the National Theatre (Jiří Šesták, senator of the Parliament of the Czech Republic; Stanislav Moša, director of Brno City Theatre; Eva Kejkrtová Měřičková, director of Dejvické Theatre; Milan Uhde, dramatist and Jan Hančil, Rector of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague) and esteemed experts from all over the world: Ivan Liška (director of Bayerisches Staatsballett München), Ted Brandsen (director of the Dutch National Ballet), Johannes Öhman (director of the Royal Swedish Ballet), Mario Radačovský (artistic director of the National Theatre Brno ballet ensemble) and Alexander Katsapov (principal dancer of the National Theatre Ballet). The selection has been reduced to three candidates: Jiří Bubeníček, principal dancer of the Dresden Semperoper Ballet, Filip Barankiewicz, principal dancer of the Stuttgarter Ballett and Daria Klimentová, prima ballerina of the English National Ballet. The new artistic director of the National Theatre Ballet is supposed to take over the company completely from Petr Zuska after 15 years of his tenure in the season 2017/2018. On Saturday, December 20th, 2014 drama commission is expected to recommend the appointment of one of the three progressive Czech theatre directors: David Drábek, artistic director of Klicpera Theatre in Hradec Králové, directed a successful production of The Eleventh Commandment at the National Theatre last season. For Laterna Magica he has been currently staging the Extraordinary Voyages of Jules Verne. Last year, Daniel Špinar mounted Pictures from the Insect's Life at the National Theatre and To Be or Not to Be at the Estates Theatre. He has been also praised for the chamber production The English Lover at the Kolowrat Theatre. Since September 2014, he has been the associate director of the drama company, currently rehearsing Othello at the Estates Theatre. Ivan Krejčí is the artistic director of the Chamber Theatre Aréna in Ostrava, which has been hailed the "Theatre of the Year 2013" in the survey of the prestigious magazine World and Theatre. Among other pieces, he directed a play on Josefa Slánská With, and without Hope. The commission consists of members of the Guarantee Board of the National Theatre (Jiří Šesták, senator of the Parliament of the Czech Republic; Stanislav Moša, director of Brno City Theatre; Eva Kejkrtová Měřičková, director of Dejvické Theatre; Milan Uhde, dramatist and Jan Hančil, Rector of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague), together with director Miroslav Krobot and director Hana Burešova from Divadlo v Dlouhé. Actress Eva Salzmannová has been chosen by her colleagues as a representative of the drama company to the committee as well.
