Ann Van den Broek and Sanjoy Roy present the booklet work/world

Last year WArd/waRD invited Sanjoy Roy, dance writer for The Guardian, to freely write about the works Joy Enjoy Joy and its research performance Creating Joy by renowned Flemish choreographer Ann Van den Broek. The eight resulting essays, written to be enjoyed, are now bundled in a colourful booklet named work/world, presented alongside an online page of videos, to create a new, hybrid form to experience dance with dance writing.

The wide-ranging and accessible stories are Sanjoy’s personal journeys in connecting the works with the world, and vice versa. Sometimes he zooms in with a magnifying glass, focusing on one specific step. Sometimes he zooms out as if standing on a satellite. Each chapter is a kind of "culture trip" in which the reader travels to different places, along unforeseen routes that go off the beaten track.

Texts that transcend the performances
The essays are a long way from familiar formats such as review, analysis or commentary. In fact, they have a way of transcending the performances. If you have seen Creating Joy or Joy Enjoy Joy, the stories open new windows on the choreographic works. If you haven’t, they will broaden your view on its subjects thanks to the open-minded and imaginative writing.

An innovative combination of text and video
Online, we’ve published 8 specially edited short videos from Creating Joy and Joy Enjoy Joy, corresponding to the 8 chapters, – thus combining the intense sensations of online video with the leisurely pleasures of the printed page, opening up the content to all kinds of people, all over the world.

Laura Cappelle, researcher and arts writer for New York Times and Financial Times, amongst others, wrote about the book: Very few writers can connect the dots between dance and the wider culture as entertainingly as Sanjoy Roy does. These essays – whimsical, wise and full of illuminating descriptions – show exactly why.”
