Mime Fest 2020: Czech and Slovak Edition

The 9th Mime Fest, festival of mime theatre in Polička near Svitavy, will not welcome international participants this year due to the pandemic. From 16 to 19 September, it will focus on Czech and Slovak productions, said Petra Jílková on behalf of the organizing team.

“Travel restrictions, which have affected the whole world, presented a great challenge to the Mime Fest organisers – to maintain the high standards, quality and reputation of the festival,” said Jílková. The Czech and Slovak edition will offer classical mime theatre, physical theatre, puppetry, as well as juggling and contemporary circus productions. Participants can also choose from multiple workshops.

One of the guest artists in Polička this year will be Lenka Vagnerová, a leading figure of Czech dance theatre. She will present her latest creation Panoptikum which sees the cruel world of once-popular freak shows portrayed as a mystically decadent and visually crazy show.

Mime Fest will welcome two contemporary circus companies, Losers Cirque Company and Cirk La Putyka. “Losers” will bring their new production Mimjové, featuring Vanda Hybnerová.“It’s an adventurous story inspired by popular animated films about Asian martial arts. La Putyka will also present their most recent show called Kaleidoscope, a colourful mosaic of crazy jumps on a teeterboard, group dance choreographies, aerial acrobatics, and trampoline flips,” said Jílková.

Mime Fest will also host several one-man shows. Pavol Seriš’s solo piece tells a crazy story of an extra-terrestrial who longs to become an earthling. The clown Vojta Švejda will turn into an Illusionist who gives a spectacular show, from opera to western, from ballet to horror. And the juggler Filip Zahradnický will focus on the attractiveness and fleetingness of wealth in all its forms and meanings.

“There’ll be performances for kindergartens and primary schools too. Odivo Theatre from Slovakia will present a playful puppet show Divočiny (Where the Wild Things Are) and a biological and experimental slapstick Rajče a okurka (Tomato and Cucumber)”, said Jílková.

The festival offers three workshops. One of them will be led by the Czech mime artist, mime teacher and festival dramaturge Radim Vizváry. Filip Hajduk will teach workshop participants how to do physical comedy, and the acrobats from Losers Cirque Company will offer contemporary circus fundamentals, added Jílková.
