Czech National Ballet

I have been preparing podcasts for Taneční aktuality for a couple of years now. I'm currently finishing up the Young Blood series, in which I try to show what problems dancers face at the beginning of their careers. For this discussion, I wanted to invite a National Theatre dancer.

The last premiere of this season for the Czech National Ballet in Prague was rather unexpectedly the romantic La Sylphide. Replacing the originally intended programme of George Balanchine's Who Cares? and Brahms - Schönberg Quartet. 

Jean-Christophe Maillot's version of Cinderella returned to Prague. A new generation of dancers from the National Theatre got the opportunity to perform in an unusual take on the well-known story.

It is undoubtedly a good thing that the work of the distinguished choreographer John Neumeier is finally entering the repertoire of the Czech National Ballet. 

At the beginning of October, the National Theatre Ballet published the following on its Facebook profile: “Dance Europe magazine has announced the CRITICS' CHOICE poll.” 

In early April, the Czech National Ballet presented this season’s last premiere bpm. The abbreviation should stand for beats per minute, which is a term referring to the heart rate or rhythm of a music piece. 

The Czech National Ballet has presented a triptych of works by world renowned contemporary choreographers William Forsythe, Edward Clug and Wayne McGregor.

Determined not to rob its audience of an exceptional experience, the Czech National Ballet is going to publish video recordings of three brand-new performances (originally presented under the umbrella title Phoenix) on its YouTube channel.

The National Theatre is planning nineteen premieres for the 2020/2021 theatre season – including those that have been postponed from last season owing to the quarantine. 

This March saw the closure of all theatres because of the COVID-19 pandemic but muses do not remain silent – world-class ballet companies go virtual and for a limited period of time, they release live recordings of their productions.

Within the span of twenty years (that is one generation), the Prague’s National Theatre ballet-goers have had the unique opportunity to experience four stagings of a ballet based on Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin’s famous verse-novel Eugene Onegin.
